European Highlights

I’ve been slowly working my way through Europe over the last 15 years or so, exploring new countries and returning to some of my favorite cities over and over again. Each place holds its own unique charm—whether it's the raw beauty of nature, the buzz of vibrant cities, or the stories etched into centuries-old architecture. As I look ahead to my next trip across the pond (Austria and Slovenia, here I come), I’m excited to share my top five favorite European destinations (so far!). Interested in checking out one of these places? Let’s talk about how I can help you plan your trip!

Scotland

Scotland feels like stepping into a storybook. In Edinburgh, the imposing silhouette of Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline, while the Royal Mile hums with the energy of street performers, historic tours, and cozy pubs. And for those who love a good ghost story, the underground vaults and haunted closes will send chills down your spine.

Venture into the Highlands, where you’ll find jaw-dropping vistas at Glen Coe, mysterious waters at Loch Ness, and endless trails for hiking enthusiasts. The landscapes here seem almost untouched by time.

On the Isle of Skye, the Fairy Pools shimmer in shades of blue and green, while the rugged peaks of the Cuillin Hills beckon climbers. Every turn feels like uncovering a hidden gem.

For Harry Potter and Outlander fans alike, you’ll recognize buildings, vistas, and castles left and right. But watch out for the stones - no trips back in time for you!

Croatia

Croatia is a mesmerizing blend of ancient history and coastal beauty. In Split, the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace is not just a relic—it’s a living, breathing hub of activity, with charming cafes, boutiques, and music echoing through its stone corridors. For a different perspective, try a Jewish walking tour of the Palace and old city.

Dubrovnik, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is a feast for the eyes with its striking terracotta rooftops and dramatic walls that plunge into the turquoise sea. History buffs and Game of Thrones fans will fall in love with this city's cultural depth.

A day trip to Kotor Bay in Montenegro offers pristine views of jagged mountains cradling glass-like waters, with idyllic villages such as Perast inviting exploration. Don’t forget to indulge in some fresh seafood along the way!

Côte d'Azur

Ah, the French Riviera—a playground for dreamers and bon vivants. In Nice, the Promenade des Anglais offers endless views of the sparkling Mediterranean, while the Old Town bursts with color, from fragrant flower markets to lively cafes serving socca, a local chickpea pancake. Provence’s wine country is just a short journey away. Here, time seems to slow down as you wander through vineyards that produce world-renowned rosés and sip wine under the shade of olive trees. Villages like Saint-Paul-de-Vence are the epitome of French charm, with narrow cobbled streets, art galleries, and sweeping views of the countryside.

Spain

Spain captivates with its contrasts and rich heritage. Madrid is a city that never sleeps, where you can lose yourself in masterpieces at the Prado, take a relaxing stroll through Retiro Park, or savor churros with chocolate at a local café. Meanwhile, Toledo is an extraordinary blend of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim heritage, seen in its ancient synagogues, grand mosques, and towering Gothic cathedral. This hilltop city feels like stepping back into medieval times - another perfect spot for a Jewish history walking tour! In Andalucía, there are several must-see cities, including Sevilla, Córdoba, and Málaga (see my Málaga Fora Travel destination guide here). My personal favorite, however, is Granada - a cultural treasure trove, home to the enchanting Alhambra Palace with its intricate Islamic architecture and lush gardens. I may be a bit biased as I spent a semester abroad living in Granada in undergrad, but I really think it should be on every traveler’s list.

London

London, a bustling metropolis, is a city of endless layers that you’ll probably never fully uncover. Whether you’re marveling at history in the Tower of London, walking along the iconic Thames River, or standing in awe of Big Ben, London’s landmarks are unforgettable. The British Museum is a portal to the world, housing artifacts like the Rosetta Stone and Egyptian mummies. Don’t forget the West End—the theater scene here rivals Broadway, offering unforgettable performances night after night. But what I love most about London is what happens once you’ve seen all the big tourist attractions and can venture into some of the more residential neighborhoods. One of the best days I’ve had on a trip was a day spent in Regent’s Park, reading on a bench for hours in the sun.
